The end of an era has finally come as blackberry announced to stop the production of smartphones in the industry.
BlackBerry was done with internal hardware design as soon as the DTEK50 was released. That device was based on a TCL reference design, and the leaked upcoming DTEK60 uses the same model as well.
We saw this coming, and it is not a surprise anyway because blackberry which a decade ago was among the world’s largest smartphone makers, has seen its global market share slip to less than one percent as Apple and Android devices have dominated.
CEO John Chen said in October 2015 that the company would exit the smartphone business, which has been on life support for years, if it cannot turn a profit in 2016.
… and now, Blackberry announced within their Q2 Fiscal 2017results, “Our new Mobility Solutions strategy is showing signs of momentum, including our first major device software licensing agreement with a telecom joint venture in Indonesia. Under this strategy, we are focusing on software development, including security and applications. The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners. This allows us to reduce capital requirements and enhance return on invested capital”.
Blackberry will now fully concentrate on software including security applications. The question is, who will blackberry outsource their hardware development to?
One minute silence to all those who gave up their everything to get Blackberry Bold 5 back in the days.
